Build a Wind Turbine

by Andy Greene

Would you like to harness the power of the wind to lower your electric bill? Follow these steps to build your own wind generator.

Farm families have used windmills for years to provide electricity and pump water for themselves and their livestock and crops.   Even as these old windmills decay high-tech wind turbines are providing power all over the world.  You’ll need to be in a location that gets some wind for this to be worth the effort.  We have reviewed the following kits and plans in detail.  They are listed in order of our recommendation:

This is our top choice in wind turbine plans and kits. The graphics on the site are not as flashy, but the product is good. It is very affordable. The plans are easy to read and follow. Your turbine can produce over 1000 watts of power. The authors have build several of these an claim that you can build one for under $100. Materials are readily available, and they have tips on how to find some stuff for free or very low cost. According to the authors these turbines are “tough enough to endure the tough Canadian climate or anywhere in the world”.  They live off the grid in Canada, so I tend to believe them.

Earth for Electricity

Jim Martin’s product is 273 pages long and it includes great information about solar power as well as information on building a wind generator.  If you are interested in solar too, then this ebook is definitely a bargain. His writing style is clear and photos and diagrams are excellent. When this book is available again it will be the best bet if you want both solar and wind in one eBook.

Home Made Energy

An up-and-coming product that includes both wind and solar. The authors claim that you will get a power-generating wind mill for as little as $100 if you follow their recommendations. You can use this to power up any type of electronic devices that need power. You will also get to build a solar panel for under $200. The emphasis is really on solar. The videos pick up where the ebook leaves off.  This is a good product for solar energy, probably not the best starting point for wind energy.

You can also explore free wind resources, most of which are provided by the U.S. Government especially for U.S. residents.  These are a good place to start if you want to decide whether wind energy is practical for you.
